2009 Vintage “best for 25 years”?
As the harvest comes to an end in Bordeaux, the wine trade is once again echoing to the sounds of excited vintners.
There seems to be no doubt that the weather in Bordeaux this year has been exceptional. When such an august person as Olivier Bernard of Domaine du Chevalier states that “these are the best grapes I have brought in. Better than 2005, 2000, 1989 and 1982”, then even the most sceptical wine trader cannot be blamed for getting a little bit excited.
Is this another vintage of the century”? Well, only time will tell, but as ever, the biggest questions hang over pricing and the consumer
After 2000, 2003,2005 and even 2008 (once Parker’s reviews had been released) and given the current state of the world economy, will there be the appetite for another great Bordeaux vintage? After some of last year’s more realistic prices, will the Bordelaise look to revert to the 2005 level of pricing?
As the fun and games begin for another year, watch as the hype from Bordeaux grows and is countered by the best efforts of the merchants to keep prices within reason.
What we’d like to see is a win for both sides. Let’s hope both that the hype is justified and that the good sense a number of the Chateaux demonstrated last year in their pricing is carried on for another vintage.
